OneFS authentication is implemented for many different storage environments and authentication requirements can differ from setup to setup. Background authentication processes (daemons) add complexity to configuring authentication. Issues can and do arise. But help and guidance are readily available!

Check out Fragile Cogs: Starting and Stopping OneFS Authentication Processes  on the Uptime Information Hub for information and advice about starting and stopping authentication daemons. (Hint: Follow the instructions or call EMC Isilon Technical Support first.)

The big deal about ETAs

Latest posts by Risa Galant (see all)

If you administer a data center, service disruptions and data integrity issues are probably your worst nightmare.  EMC Technical Advisories (ETAs) alert you to potential hardware or software issues that could have serious negative impacts on your production environment, such as data loss, data unavailability, or significant loss of system functionality.

EMC Isilon ETAs provide time-critical information about technical issues that affect EMC Isilon products. The advisories include specific details about an issue and instructions to help prevent or alleviate the problem. There are a few different ways to track ETAs. Whichever method or combination of methods you use, pay special attention to ETAs with the impact severity rating of critical.

Keep up with the latest ETAs by:

To learn how to set up ETA email alerts, you can watch this video: How to Set Up an Email Event Notification in OneFS.

Latest posts by Risa Galant (see all)

During our July “Ask the Expert” session, you shared experiences and ideas about Isilon technical content. The new EMC Isilon Current Patches Info Hub is a direct response to your requests for help in quickly determining whether or not content is relevant to you – in this case, content about Isilon OneFS patches.

Concise information about OneFS patches is now available on the new EMC Isilon Current Patches Info Hub. This is the place to find summaries of recently-released patches from EMC Isilon Engineering. Patches are grouped by OneFS release, starting with the most recent releases and patches. The summaries are designed to help you quickly determine what the patch addresses, how important it is, and whether or not you need it.

The Current Patches Info Hub supplements the Current Isilon Patches document.  Use the Current Patches Info Hub to determine whether or not you need a patch. If you do, go to the Current Isilon Patches document for more information about the patch, including the complete description and instructions for downloading and extracting the patch files.

You must be an EMC customer to download Isilon patches. You’ll need to log in to EMC Online Support with appropriate credentials to access the detailed patch READMEs and to download patches.

Check out the EMC Isilon Current Patches Info Hub and let us know what you think. If you have feedback for us about this or any other Isilon technical content, email us at isicontent@emc.com. And thank you!

The self-encrypted drives erasure puzzle

Risa Galant

Latest posts by Risa Galant (see all)

Self-Encrypted Drives (SEDs) provide hardware-level security for sensitive on-disk data. Data on SEDs is encrypted using a combination of an internal key and a drive access password. Using SEDs is simple. After performing initial drive set-up, you don’t have to do anything: SEDs handle data encryption and decryption automatically. If you want to access the data, you have to know the password. And without that password, the protected on-disk data is inaccessible.

But what if something goes wrong? Can you recover the encrypted data if the password or internal keys are lost or deleted? What if someone removes a SED from a powered-on node, or a SED becomes corrupt or is otherwise defective? What if business reasons require that you completely erase the drive? How do you safely go about doing that, and how do you verify the erasure?

To find answers to these questions, check out the Uptime Information Hub article Data erasure and SED drives: An overview and FAQ, available on the EMC Community Network’s Isilon community space. You’ll learn:

  • How SEDs work
  • What happens if a password is lost, a drive becomes defective, or someone tries to make off with the drive
  • How to erase a defective drive and how to erase all SEDs in a node or cluster
  • How to confirm that a SED has been erased
  • How long typical erasure operations take

And more.

Let us know what you think of the Data erasure and SED drives: An overview and FAQ article. If you have feedback for us about this or any other Isilon technical content, email us at isicontent@emc.com. And thank you!
